About ADHD
What is ADHD?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition marked by patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that are not typical for a person’s age. It affects approximately 5% of children and adolescents-more often boys-and around 2.5% of adults, according to the World Health Organization. ADHD can interfere with academic performance, family life, and social relationships, often persisting from early childhood into adulthood.
When ADHD Appears and Related Conditions
Symptoms often start before school age, with many children showing signs as early as 2.5 years. Beyond its core traits, ADHD is frequently linked with other challenges such as sleep problems, mood disorders, oppositional behaviors, and even physical issues like obesity. These co-occurring conditions can make day-to-day functioning even harder, further affecting relationships, learning, and self-esteem.
Importance of Early Diagnosis
Detecting ADHD early- especially in children under 5- can greatly improve outcomes. Early interventions can help children develop vital skills in emotional regulation, attention control, and social interaction. This proactive approach reduces the long-term impact on school performance and personal relationships, giving children a stronger foundation for success later in life.
Treatment Approaches
Experts recommend a multimodal treatment strategy combining non-medication and medication-based interventions. Behavioral therapy is the first-line treatment for children under 6, while older children and adults may benefit from a combination of behavioral strategies and medications. Common medications include stimulants like methylphenidate and amphetamines, as well as non-stimulants such as atomoxetine, guanfacine, and clonidine. The goal is to address symptoms using a holistic approach for the best possible results.
